The Clarendon Way

Broughton to Oliver's Battery

The Clarendon Way is a 24 mile walk joining Winchester and Salisbury, crossing the Test Valley between Kings Sombourne and Houghton. Broughton to Oliver's Battery is a 9.5 mile walk.

Starting at Rectory Way in Broughton, the walk passes through farmland to Parnholt Wood, Farley Mount Country Park, and via minor roads to the outskirts of Winchester where you reach Oliver's Battery and its historic earthworks. It was believed that Oliver Cromwell sited guns here to bombard Winchester Castle during the Civil War, although the distance (at around 2 miles) was probably too far away.
